National Toothache Day is approaching on February 9th, and we’re talking about what four different types of toothaches might indicate. A variety of factors can cause toothache pain. And the type of pain you experience can provide clues about the underlying cause of your discomfort. When you’re looking for a MA dentist, you can always rely on Prime Smile!
Sharp Pain
This type of pain is often caused by tooth sensitivity or a cracked tooth. When hot or cold temperatures, or sweet or acidic foods, come in contact with a sensitive tooth, it can cause sharp pain. A crack in the tooth may also cause pain when biting or chewing.
Sensitive Teeth to Hot and Cold
This type of dental pain is a bit more common. It may be caused by a problem with the tooth’s enamel, such as a cavity or tooth erosion. It may also be caused by a complication with the tooth’s nerve, such as pulpitis.
Throbbing Pain
Throbbing pain that’s more severe is usually caused by a deep cavity or an abscess. An abscess is a pocket of pus that forms at the end of the tooth’s root. This pain may be accompanied by fever and swelling.
Minor Aches and Pain
This type of toothache pain is duller compared to the previous types of toothaches mentioned. This type of pain may be caused by a problem with the tooth’s nerve, such as pulpitis, which is inflammation of the tooth’s nerve. It may also be caused by a tooth that is not fully erupted or by a problem with the jaw joint.
However, other less serious and time-sensitive issues could be from having food stuck in your teeth or gums or teeth grinding. In this case, flossing and rinsing your mouth may be able to help remove any food debris logged in between the teeth.
