Botox

What is Botox for Dental?

As a mainstream cosmetic treatment for facial wrinkles and lines, Botox is also used by many dentists to assist their patients with various needs. Considered a fairly noninvasive treatment, Botox has helped thousands overcome ailments such as Bruxism, TMJ, and more. Beyond the immediate benefits, many insurance policies cover this treatment when administered by an approved dental practice to treat underlying concerns.

Uses of Botox for Dental Purposes

  • TMJ

Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction is a common disorder caused by misalignment of the teeth or jaw, injury to the jaw, grinding or clenching, arthritis, and stress. Left untreated, TMJ can worsen, causing increased discomfort and severe pain.

Botox has been shown as a highly effective solution to alleviate much of the pain associated with TMJ. Lasting an average of three months, patients have reported little to no pain and a significant increase in jaw mobility.

  • Bruxism

While grinding of the teeth or clenching of the jaw is common, these actions can be devasting in excess. Bruxism is the condition of clenching or grinding excessively with no underlying cause. Often, this condition will improve on its own. However, for many, Bruxism is a life-long occurrence. Your dentist can recommend various forms of treatment, Botox being one.

With Botox treatments, the masseter muscle is slightly weakened to eliminate the involuntary grinding and clenching actions. This treatment then allows your muscles to relax, heal, and reduce the stress and damage being caused to your teeth.

  • Dentures

When lip muscles reposition due to decreased vertical dimension, dentures may not properly fit. Botox treatments help to relax these muscles while retaining the position so that patients can transition into new dentures with a higher rate of success.
